Playing with coffee toning. This is one of my favorite black rendering toner for cyanotype. Here we can see the difference between the standard print, and the toned one. I have experienced few years ago with bleaching first, and will probably get there again. I have seen some formulas using carbonate potassium.

Hello,
It’s a very good result, can you give some tips on the process?
I’m experimenting with different techniques, but I can’t get such good results …
I tried instant coffee, very concentrated, with bleached and without bleached print, etc.
Process is pretty much straight forward. This is a 4×5 negative, exposed for 4 minutes under UV light. Exposure time will depend on the power of the light source (you can check what I’m using in a previous post) and also how old is the coating on your paper, and a bunch of other parameter I don’t even understand yet. Let it dry, then sunk into quite concentrated instant coffee (cold). I think it makes a difference when you let the print dry before the toning. Also it is important to get the right negative. It’s more difficult when dealing with negatives out of the camera, as you don’t have the option to fix any mistake. I’m lucky with that one.
